Margin Beads

At both ends of your necklace will be the Margin Beads. These will be used to enclose the message and to adjust the length of the necklace. They can be just a set of spacer beads, if you don't need much room, or some bugle beads lined up, (be sure and put a seed bead between each bugle bead) or a whole lot of seed beads in a row, or whatever suits your fancy.

When you're making a multiple-strand necklace, the margin beads should make each successive string about 3/4 inch longer than the last one. If you're using spacer beads, as in example # 2 on page 3, then make sure that the ends of each string line up. What I mean is: since the margins will vary, the way to match them up is to put the same number of bugle beads on the outside of the large bead. The inside of the large bead might have 2 BB on the first string, and 4 BB on the next, but with just 1 BB on the outside of the large bead, the finished necklace will look matched-up.

Bugle Bead Necklaces (TJ1)
(see # 3 on the
Jewelry Page)

In this kind of necklace, you use bugle beads (BB), instead of seed beads (SB), for message beads (mb), and background beads (bb). Remember that the message in this kind of necklace takes up a lot of room. You might want to plan out your necklace with the letter tiles first (see cheat sheets), or your necklace might hang down to your belly button.

Your message is Yes: with mb in black bugle beads (bBB), and the bb in white bugle beads (wBB). Notice that the abbreviations have changed from the previous instructions. This is to prevent the abbreviations from turning into something like bBBmb or wBBbb. Too weird.

Start the Y with one black seed bead (bSB), then bBB, bSB, bBB, bSB, bBB. The first dash is done. Now you need a wBB. Next is a bSB, bBB, bSB, and the dot is done. Now another wBB. Repeat the dash. Add another wBB, and then another dash. The Y is finished.

You're ready for the beads between letters. They are a wBB, white seed bead (wSB), wBB, wSB, and a wBB. The E is very simple. Just a bSB, bBB, and bSB. Repeat the beads between letters. Now the S. Start with a bSB, bBB, bSB, wBB, bSB, bBB, bSB, wBB, bSB, bBB, and a bSB. You've spelled "yes" in bugle beads. Cool!

Series Necklaces (TJ3)
(see # 7 on the
Jewelry Page)

This kind of necklace uses a lot of the same color seed beads in a row to make a dot, and a lot more of the same color seed beads in a row to make a dash. The number of beads you use is up to you. Just make sure the dash is approximately three times as long as the dot, and the spaces between dots and dashes inside the same letter are about the size of a dot. The space between letters should be about the length of a dash. The space between words should be about three times the length of a dash.
